We have always stressed the importance of a comfortable and supportive mattress in our mattress reviews and online comparison guides. A good mattress is important, but it’s not enough to have a good night of sleep.

You could be having trouble sleeping, such as taking too long to fall asleep, or waking up frequently at night.

Your morning routine is a key factor in how good you sleep, and consequently, how productive your day will be.

Celebrities, entrepreneurs, and sports stars all make bedtime an integral part of their day.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a famous Portuguese footballer who has a sleep coach. He advises him not to use his phone or other screens for more than 90 minutes before going to bed, and to sleep on fresh sheets every night.

Sir Richard Branson likes to eat dinner with his family and friends, while other celebrities light incense or light scented candles.

You can improve your nighttime routine to help you sleep better and have more productive days. You should be able to relax your mind and avoid distractions.

Gadgets & Screens

The proliferation of devices at home is perhaps the greatest obstacle to good sleep. Smartphones are especially harmful.

According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), using gadgets in bed or before bed can suppress sleep hormones and make your brain more alert. This prevents you falling asleep. You will also be awakened by the constant vibrations and chimes of these gadgets.

Put away all gadgets for at least an hour before you go to bed. Turn off your phone and put it on airplane mode. Switch off all non-essential screens and turn off the TV.

This will allow you to build up your sleep hormone in preparation for sleep.

Avoid bringing your electronic devices into your bedroom if you can. To wake you up each morning, get a bedside radio and alarm clock. You won’t be tempted to reach for your phone if you don’t sleep well or hear a notification.

Relaxing

Everybody relaxes in their own ways, so find yours.

Reading a book 30 to 60 minutes before you go to bed is a great way to spend your time reading. Warm up in a tub and add essential oils such as lavender or mint to help you relax.

It can help you to relax and de-stress from a long day by spending quality time with people you care about. Invite a friend or family member to join you for dinner. Anxiety and stress can be reduced by making a nightly phone call to a distant friend or family member.

Relaxation can also be achieved by listening to soothing music, drinking a relaxing herbal tea (no caffeine) or engaging in a hobby such as knitting, cooking, and drawing.

It is important to exercise. Even a quick walk in the afternoon can make you feel more relaxed. You should not exercise close to bedtime, as your body may be unable to relax due the higher energy levels.

Discipline

You should establish a consistent routine that you can keep to. You should establish a timetable that includes specific times for each activity. It is important to set a time for each activity.

A consistent routine will help you train your body and make it easier to get rid of bad habits before bed. You should stick to this routine every day, but you can vary a little on weekends for Netflix binging or date night.

Note for physicians:Talk to your doctor if you have trouble sleeping at night. A sleep disorder could be something that needs treatment or medical attention.
